  Known as KNU, the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kiev was founded in 1834 in the Ukrainian capital of Kiev. It is the third oldest university in the country and, although it was founded as the Imperial University of St. Vladimir in Kiev, it was renamed in 1939 in honor of Taras Shevchenko, a Ukrainian poet and politician who was known for modern Ukrainian literature. Most of the buildings of KNU University are located in the center of Kiev. The Red University building is the main building of the university and is also a recognized national symbol of the Ukrainian higher education system.
